Two Farmer built hydroplanes battling it out in 1964

The Jade Dragon F-888 and Barracuda F-77 setting up for a turn in the backstretch during The Wheeling Vintage Raceboat Regatta over Labor Day weekend.
Spectators watching the boats run probably didn't realize they were viewing a combined 117 years worth of boat racing history ply the waters of the mighty Ohio River with just these 2 boats alone. The Jade Dragon F-888 is a 266 class hull, built in 1965 by Henry & Larry Lauterbach and is now owned by Dan & Debbie Joseph of Wheeling, WV. The original hull was built for Gene Bramlett and that original hull was used by Larry Lauterbach to rebuild this new hull. The Barracuda F-77 is a 225 cubic inch, Division 1 class hull. The boat is the only known survivor of a series of unique boats built by Fred Wickens. He built this one in 1946-1947. This beauty was restored by owner/driver Tim Settle of Brookville, Ohio. This hull raced from 1947-58 and raced in both F and H classes. The first owner was Lou Butler of Zanesville, Ohio (1947-1953) and they set a 10-mile competition speed record set Oct. 3, 1948 at New Martinsville, WV. The next owner was Ray Smith of Eaton, Ohio (Smith's Speed Shop) and he raced her from 1953-1958.
Next summer, try to make an vintage event and see boat racing history --- running on the water and motors roaring out at full song.

Lauterbach Special A-91
Henry Lauterbach's first hydro that he built for himself was recently restored by Larry Lauterbach & Steve Lewis and was on display at The Wheeling Vintage Raceboat Regatta in Wheeling, West Virginia. Henry originally built this hull in 1952 for the 135 cu. in. class. Steve worked for Henry for a number of years in Hampton, Virginia and is now the proud owner of this rare hydro. This hydro is 13' 6" and powered by a Ford Flathead V8-60 that was originally built by Vic Edelbrock, Sr. and was restored by Rich Willim.

Miss Peg F-90
Jack Hines found the infamous hydro in the deep south many years ago parked in the 'back 40' and had to cut a path through a swamp to get the  Ron Jones, Sr. built 266 hydro out.
After a painstaking rebuild of the entire boat in Dayton, Ohio, Jack traveled to Lake Palourde in Morgan City, Louisiana where the Miss Peg ran many races during its career under all its different names - Gun Shy, Tin Horn, Miss Peg, Delta Lady. A fitting tribute to have the boat's first run at its most raced venue. Those involved with the boat by incarnation were present -
Gun Shy: Ennie Argence, Richard Landaiche (nephew to Ennie), Roy Wilson Jr. (Sr. drove after Ennie hurt). Tin Horn: Jerry Bilbe (son of Harry, owner), Clayton Boudreaux driver.  Miss Peg: Pat Buntin Miley (Bill Buntin's wife), Sean Buntin (son), Damon King (daughter), Joey Nolan (Joe Nolan Sr. father crew), Denver Ray Mut (Melvin Mut father crew), Kip Fabre' (son of engine builder Cliff), Jean Talliac (driver after Bill), Larry Farris (son of owner Lawrence).  Gun Shy II: Robert and Mike Herrington (owners/driver).  Delta Lady: Joyce Edmonston (wife of owner Joe?).

Owned & driven by Doug Whitley. A great read about the story on how Doug and his boat ended up making the trip to Cape Coral, Florida for the 1960 Nationals and how Billy Schumacher got to drive it and won the National Championship & set a World Speed Competition Record of 73.710 mph. This and other neat stories on MissGoodwin.com
Thanks to Doug for all your hard work as the APBA V&H chairman.

Justa-Pest II N-56
Danny Walls, Sr.
We recently lost this great Champion driver, seen here piloting Gene Benning's 225 class hydro in the early 1970s.
The couple of times I spoke to Dan in the last few years, I really enjoyed listening to him talk about this boat and the accomplishments he and my Dad made.
Bill Benning.

While driving many boats in the Y, S & H classes, Bellevue, Kentucky's Danny Walls was most successful in the N class where he won 3 straight USA National Championships, 1969-70-71. Later, Dannny spent 2 years driving in the unlimited class.  Walls was still active in inboard hydroplane racing with his son Danny, Jr. driving.

  •  E-14 Warhawk (Dea and Wally) highly modified Sooy hull (wood cabover) Chevy 305
  • E-60 Fast Company (Steve David) Karleson wood hull (with shoes and possibly a Ford 302)
  • E-726 X-Ray (Mark Burkhardt) Staudacher wood & narrow hull, Chevy
  • E-5 Jezabell (Spellman Pellerin - driver | Jim Ranson - owner) Kelson hull (with a built in shoe on the shaft log), Chevy 305
  • E-30 Budget Buster Racing (Ray Lynn) - homebrew conventional/cabover. Possibly Plymouth but more than likely a Chevy

  • Note the group of diverse boats, drivers, builders, motors and a good ole' flying start. A testament to what many would call real APBA racing.

The photo taken at the 2001 Buffalo Antique & Classic Boat Show on Grand Island, NY. The boat was owned by Bob Schroeder and he had my Father (Robert Hackett) as a riding mechanic. This was the last time Bob & Bob rode together. I received my ride directly after and the boat was sold. I will never forget the things my Dad did for me and this was the best memory of him I have. European Vintage Hydroplanes On Display

    My Darling Lolita A-5
Scott Courts 14 year journey to restore a 1959 Henry Lauterbach hydroplane ends with his maiden voyage at the Lake Minden vintage event put on by the California Speedboat Association in conjuction with the Northern California Outboard Association. This boat was commisioned by Bob Baxter and campaigned as Gale. In 1967, Roger D' Eath raced it as PSST! in the 145 class and in 1968 he raced it as Bachelor One when he won the 1968 Orange Bowl Regatta in Miami. Roger sold it the Huey Long who campaigned it well into the 1970s.

    Fat Chance N-52
Royce Richards's beautiful 225 cu. in. Lauterbach hydro was displayed for the first time at the "Quake On The Lake" regatta in Waterford, Michigan. It has been restored perfectly to the exact way it was when last raced in the mid 1960's. Royce was the owner/driver in the late 1950's. The restoration was done by Dave & Scott Wresinski at their business "Marine Services Unlimited" in Houghton Lake, Michigan.

    Wild Willie 78-P
This hull was built by Fred Wickens and was powered by a 241 cu in Dodge running 6 Stromberg 97 carbs. The owner/driver was Jerry Ballard and riding mechanic was Bob Stender. Jerry Ballard was also the original owner of the 280 Hallett built hydroplane Tijuana Taxi now restored and ran by Jay Marshall. Thanks to Bob Stender for providing this photograph taken in 1965.

Ron Musson - Portage Lakes race in Akron, Ohio - early 1950s
The boat in the background was his Dauntless Plumbing and Electric hull. My dad and Ron started outboard racing together. Ron went into inboards and my dad went up to the D stock hydro class. For only a very brief time (less than a year), they were partners in campaigning Chromium and Chromate. I think both were US-1's in both 135 and 266. Ron and my dad remained close friends throughout his Unlimited career. Miss Bardahl spent a night in my dad's machine shop where some blower gears were repaired after the 64 or 65 Detroit Gold cup. I am the little kid in the picture showing Ron my balsa hydroplane. I am now 66 and my model hydroplanes got a little larger.  They are in the Models section of the Vintage Hydroplane website. My race career started with JU's and ended in a D stock hydro. I guess racing never leaves your blood. Jim Osborne
