Tom D’Eath and Bob Hamilton won championships
in the 1950’s with the full scale
Shake Rattle and Roll A-43.
The "Lauterbach Special" is
now owned by Mike Taggart.
The idea for the model came about after
I was over at Mike's house and we had just pulled her out of the water
for the winter.
I was fascinated by the simplicity and beauty
of the boat.
The mahogany, spruce, polished aluminum
and all those brass nails.
I said to Mike, "it would make a gorgeous
model," with that...Mike was unrelenting.
He wanted a model to take with him to California
when he left Michigan for the winter.
A week or so later, I took the measurements
off the hull to draw up the plans for the model and 160 hours later, I
had a set of working plans to start building.
The engine and all hardware are made of
brass and nickel.
It took approximately 1700 hours to build
the 1/8" scale Shake Rattle & Roll.
The funny thing about building museum models,
it take's longer to build the model than the real boat.
But you don't have to create every part
from scratch on the full size ones.
The travel box is built the same as the
boat.
Spruce frames, mahogany gussets and skin
with brass nails and aluminum lifting tabs coming through the top to attach
the lifting bridle.
The hull didn't take long to build but the
brass nails that intrigued me so
.........became the bane in my life........taking
two weeks to complete.
The seats and crash pads are leather.
The cowls are fiberglass.
