Saturday, July 14, 2001, the Toronto chapter
of ACBS (Antique & Classic Boat Society) held it's 22nd annual Antique
& Classic Boat Show. The event was held at Sagamo Park, Gravenhurst,
Muskoka.
There were over 100 woodie boats in the
water, with the feature boats being the Greavette Streamliner. Other popular
areas included a huge land display of vintage boats and a "field of dreams"
with many boats for sale. The Toronto chapter of Antique Outboard Motor
Club had a great display of over 50 outboards highlighted by Ron Stevenson's
beautiful Mercury trailer. The Flea Market area was loaded with gems and
the vendor area featured extensive displays of nautical products and crafts.
Vintage raceboats on display included Gordon
Wilson's 1950 33' Les Staudacher built, My Sweetie. (A note from
TVH) I have some points of interest from a fact sheet on this hull when
it this hull was for sale about 13 years ago. Designed by John Hacker as
a new radical stepped hydroplane design for what would be Horace Dodge's
first My Sweetie. Les went on to build four My Sweetie's
for Dodge during the next four years. Previous other owners were Harald
Mistele, Jack Freuenhein, and James Lewis. Some of the specs on this hull
are as follows: plywood construction with 9'9" beam, stainless steel rub
strakes, 1750 HP, V-12 GM Allison (from a P-38 fighter airplane), with
V-drive, hull is triple step with twin rudders, 60 gallon fuel tank, 10
gallon water-cooled oil tank, 24 volt starting system. Top speed for this
hull was 109 MPH over a 5 mile course in 1955.
3 vintage outboard raceboats from the DeGlopper
fleet included Chet Webb's N-82, Ray DeGlopper's N-174 Bullet
and Stover Hire's 9 time national Champ 56-H.
The black Miss Canada F-84 vintage
Greavette racer made an unscheduled speed pass by the docks, much to the
delight of the 50,000 fans in attendance.
Of great interest to fans was the 1936
Minett Shields Gentleman's racer DELTA. This famous boat has been
featured in the Robert Speltz books. Owner Dr. Hugh Boyes sold this remarkable
racer at this event & Delta will now reside in the deep South. The
deal was rumored to be in the six figure range according to the buzz amongst
attendees at the registration tent.
A couple of impressive models where on display
as well as the Ron Stevenson's Classic C hydro which was displayed with
the Mercury motors.
