The Southern Style is 150 cubic inch class hydroplane that was built in 1968 by Henry Lauterbach for Tom D'Eath who piloted this hydroplane to 3 National Championships 1969, 1970 and 1974. He also set 3 World Straightaway Records. The first Kilo record was in 1970 being set (near Miami, FL) at 121.82 mph. The second was in 1971, setting the record at 126.03 mph at New Martinsville, WVA. This record stood until 1975. The third time was 1976 at New Martinsville, WVA at 129.998 mph and it held the record until 1989. The last time I ran the raceboat in competition was in 1976. I set the record, won the race and sold the raceboat. I was able to repurchase Southern Style back in 1988. I have finished all the woodworking and painting on the hull, but not done the lettering or final painting yet. Presently I am working on the restoration of the original trailer. Then I need to put in all back together. © Tom D'Eath |
