Steve Lewis' 135 Lauterbach
This was Henry Lauterbach's personal hydroplane.
Larry told me that it was originally built in 1953. Larry showed me some
photos of the boat when it was new. When Henry sold the boat it was named
MOANER
by the new owner.
It's an early model Lauterbach; one that
used a wooden dash and cowlings made from aircraft drop tanks.
The boat is currently owned by Steve Lewis.
I believe Steve started the restoration then decided to have Larry do it.

Seat & aft cowling
After Steve decided to have Larry do a
complete restoration on his early 135, work began at a fast pace.
In this photo, the original frames have been saved, and incorporated into
the restoration. Note the new dash frame.
a closer view
Work progressed rapidly on Steve's boat.
I didn't have my camera with me during the early part of the restoration.
Here is a photo of the hull after the
"skin" has been added.
With the air traps in place, Larry begins
work on the sponsons.
Steve's boat gets new sponsons.
Construction begins.
In this photo the sponsons have been completed
and the original style wedges have been added.
Here is a close-up of the starboard sponson
with its original style wedge.
This is the port sponson with its original
style wedge. Note the beautiful Sapele Mahogany and contrasting Birch.
This is going to be a beauty when it is
finished.
Here is another view of the original style
wedges on Steve's 135 Lauterbach hydroplane.
Steve wants every detail preserved. He
even located an old drop-tank for the cowlings.
awaiting finish
Here is a photo of Steve's boat with the
finish coat applied.
