Not sure of race/year this photo was taken, but those exhaust pipes were not installed until 1969.

BUILDING
CAVALIER TOO E-35

Built in 1966 by Frank Farmer (using Lauterbach plans)

I had built 2 of my Uncle Will Farmer's designed 280's E-93 LINDA DIANE and E-202 CAVALIER which ran fair but the two boats I ran against were the ROWDY & the WILDCAT, so I thought I needed a Lauterbach but I could not afford to buy one. I talked to Mr. Lauterbach and he helped me build my own Lauterbach, which did not go over well with Uncle Will Farmer, Sr.

Back in the day, I did not have a lot of money and could not afford to go to all of the races. Not having money is why I had to do everything myself.  Lucky for me when I was 10 or 11 years old, Uncle Will would pick me up on the weekends and I would help him on Saturdays and again on Sunday. I would still go to help him until I was 18-19 years old, so he taught me about building boats.

Earl Kelly had a board to build the ribs on. I believe he built a 225 named the Wildcat.  I borrowed the board from him and then I went down to talk to Mr. Lauterbach and bought the deck radius and the laminated bow. I don't remember about the engine stringers..After that first trip down to his shop I would go down every Sunday and Henry would sketch out on a note pad what I was to do during the next week. Over time I bought all of the hardware from him: strut / shaft log / foot brace / throttle pedal / motor mounts / rudder / seat and he made me the exhaust stacks and lifting slings so I had everything for my boat that he used on the boats he built.
When I took the hydro down to his shop for him to tape the spear on the cowling he gave me two of his chrome Lauterbach custom built boats emblems (that I did not ask for) which really made me feel good about the job I had done building the boat. Henry called it a Japanese copy.

Larry Lauterbach and me standing on the deck with the lifting slings at the 1968 President's Cup Regatta in Washington D.C.  I ran second in the first heat on Saturday and won the second heat and both heats on Sunday.

I placed the "Lauterbach" nameplate that Henry gave me in the blue stripe above the seat.
The boat setting next to the E-35 is the Farmer E-202 I had sold & repainted for the new owner.
