REGION NEWS

REGION 4
Region 4 is "where the action is" this racing season. Dedicated followers of the fast-growing crop of power boats are finding themselves in a whirl trying to keep up with the regatta schedule. (But we wouldn't have it any other way, would we?)
The inboard season in the region opened in Grasonville, Md. The day turned out to be a fine one for the high fiying hydroplanes. A break in the cold and rainy weather lasted just long enough to provide a clear sunny day for travelers to Kent Island Yacht Club event.
The pace quickens this month: Gloucester Yacht Club regatta goes to a new course on the Severn River. This race should also mark the debut of a strong field of E and F service runabouts. Returning are Ray Gerringer's Little Lady and Bill Thomas' High Hopes and High Hopes Too, both in new fiberglass hulls.
A newcomer to the field class is James Leslie Owens of Bena, Va. His boat is the Virginian. Bill Bourne of Miami, Fla., is said to be coming north for this race and is planning to campaign consistently in Region 4 this year.
The "big boys" will be back at the President's Cup regatta in Washington, D. C. Unlimiteds are running both days of the two-day race.
Boat shows are becoming increasingly popular in this area. Many are held the day preceding a regatta in a town. Public interest usually is high if you judge by the crowds that gather and the number of questions asked the drivers and owners. Who knows how many devoted fans got their first taste of the sport in this way-or even how many of the owners?
Perhaps, one of the largest was held at the Capital Plaza in the D.C. area. All classes from inboard, outboards to cruiser were included. The seven clubs represented were the Capital Power Boat Association, the Chesapeake Outboard Racing Association of Baltimore, Md.; the Prop Riding Outboarders of the Potomac, Hyattsville, Md.; the Seafarers of Washington, D. C., the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla of Arlington, Va.; the Seneca Ski Club of Silver Springs, Md. and the Atlantis Rangers Skin Diving Club of Hyattsville, Md.

Marine Prop Riders
The month of June is upon us and it is going to be a month of action for Detroit's Marine Prop Riders! Our first regatta is June 12 at Sylvan Lake, which will take the lids off many new and improved boats for the '66 season. The 48's will have Henry Ball with new engine, Jerry Fahrney with a new boat, and George Klien with a new boat.
The 145's still are lacking for boats in our club. Chuck Kaiser is the only boat against some very strong competition from the Dayton, Ohio, group.
The 150's seem to be the big class for our club with 14 listed, either as running or under construction. Ray Weber will be running very hard this year towards the high point trophy.
Ray was 1965 high point runner-up with his Mom's Worry.
The 225's always present a good group of Detroit boats. Some of our front runners are George English with Fat Chance, Justin and Roger Schaller's Cobalt, and a new Dick Gordon-Ed Morgan combination in a cabover 225 called Chip Winder.
The 280 class has its share of real competitors in Chuck Thompson, Jr. in Chuck Wagon, Joe Allbee in Miss Superior and Jim Edwards in Mom's Nightmare. A new boat for our club with a new owner will be Ted Panaretos in his 280 which he purchased from last year's National High Point Champion Charles Dunn.
The 7 Litres are not too heavily represented , in our club. We have listed 7 boats, but not all of these are presently running. We are all waiting for Jim Miller to finish his new 7 Litre.
The Gordons and Morgans had a wonderful "treasure hunt" June 4 to help us raise money for our Loon Lake regatta, June 19. There were about 85-90 club members and friends present, and everyone had a great time. Best of luck for a safe, fun-racing season!
