Ecorse Inboard Regatta
By Joe Dowdall
Detroit Free Press
The father-son racing team of Chuck Thompson -senior and junior- proved
to be the best combination in the limited class powerboat races on the
Detroit River at Ecorse, Mich., June 30.
Chuck, the junior, turned in the fastest five-mile heat of the day
as he swept the 280-cubic inch class heats in Ecorse's annual Water Festival
Regatta.
He averaged 66.716 mph in his first heat with his Chevy-powered Chuck
Wagon and then bettered his own mark the next time out as he bounced
around the choppy 1-2/3-mile course at 69.767 mph.
Young Thompson was pushed all the way in both heats by Jack Wohlfehrt
of Grand Island, N.Y. Wohlfehrt moved from eighth to second place in the
first heat and shot from fourth to second in the last heat, although he
was forced to back off in a turn when the cowling flew off his Twin
Cities.
Chuck junior will now trade places with his famous racing father, Chuck
senior. The senior Thompson will drive the new Tahoe Miss in the
Gold Cup races. Chuck senior was the crew chief of Chuck junior Sunday.
Ray Weber of St. Clair Shores took both 150 class races with his Mom's
Worry.
Roger Schaller of Detroit had to beat Ed Morgan of Trenton both times
to win the 225 class events.

Good Weather Favors Kent Narrows Regatta
The sun and breeze favored the 8th annual Chesapeake Bay Regatta on
May 25-26, as the first big inboard power regatta of the season was held
on Kent Narrows, Md., sponsored by Kent Island Yacht Club.
Only about 35 to 40 hydroplanes were on hand for the races of the 2-day
affair, but they gave the spectators some exciting moments in the various
heats.
Two boats suffered damage when they struck something in the water punching
holes in their sides, but there was only one spill in the regatta and no
one was injured.
It was a close call for Dick Newell of Hamilton Square, N.J., in the
Apache,
as he spilled on the first turn of the second heat of the 280 class in
Saturday's race. He was right in the center of the pack as they thundered
into the turn, but the other drivers managed to swerve around him as his
boat flipped over. The heat was re-started.
The races were viewed by APBA President Charles D. Strang, who had
presented Past President E. M. Peatross of Richmond with the John Mulford
"Man of the Year" award Friday night at the Kent Island Yacht Club. The
club was host to the drivers at a dance Saturday night and a supper Sunda;y.
The only local entrant was Lemuel A. Thompson, Jr., of Chester, who
competes in the 145 hydro class in "Sandy K." He gave the hometown
fans plenty to cheer about Saturday as he finished first in the initial
heat with a fine 67.064 mph, but was second in the next heat and had to
be content with a second place trophy. On Sunday, he placed third in the
first heat, but ran out of the money in the last heat.
The national champions continued their winning ways-
F. C. (Doc) Moor, of Hialeah, Fla., in the 48 class.
George Cusick, Cambridge, in the 145 class;
Bill Ritner's Wa Wa Too, in the 266 class.
Moor, who rides what announcer Al Bauer refers to as the "bucking ironing
boards," led the pack of the small boats around the 3-lap course both days
to finish with a perfect score.
Cusick finished first in both heats Sunday in Red Top to get
a good start on this year's high point award in the 145 class.
The 266 class, the most powerful and fastest of the craft racing here,
was led by Skeeter Johnson of Cambridge, driving Wa Wa Too, although
he was given a real battle by Mike Thomas of New Jersey and Eddie Aleksandrowicz
of Baltimore. In fact, Thomas came up with the fastest time of the regatta,
roaring around the 5-mile course at 88.409 in the second heat on Sunday.
Skeeter got the first place trophy on best elapsed time.
Three boats raced in the Ski Runabout division; the first time these
boats have raced here.
The results for Saturday, May 25, were

Houma, La., Regatta
By Jack Conniff
New Orleans Times-Picayune
Ennie Argence of New Orleans put on a 1one man show June 1 at the first
annual Houma, La., Lions Club regatta. Argence won both heats of
the 44 runabouts and 48 hydros, stepped up to the 145s and finished
second, and in the exhibition run he
drove Ernie Rodriguez' Missie to victory in the SK runabouts.
Argence piloted his Gotta Go IV to victory in the 44s with speeds
of 44.262 and 45.662 mph. He beat Frank Tullos in Angela D,
and: Jimmy Bowles in Pinky.
In the 48s his Powder Puff outran Bowles' Cherokee. The
third boat, the Galant Man, entered by Leroy Theriot, blew an engine.
Argence was timed at 61.016 mph in the first heat but no time was taken
in the second.
Pete Valence of Westwego, La., won the 145 hydros, a new class in the
area. Valence's Yodelin' Gal nipped the stepped-up Argence with
a speed of 62.543 mph. Mark Pellerin's Li'l Jewel ran third. In
the second heat Valence had it all to himself as he won at the speed of
62.849 mph.
George Herrington of Zachary, La., was the winner of the first heat
of the E service runabouts in his Fresh Air II. Jerry Silva in Bill
Grusich's El Capitan was disqualified for jumping the gun. In the
second heat, regatta officials disqualified Herrington when it was decided
that his boat was not safe.
In the other exhibition runs Benny Mathews in the Wild Side
won the 280 trophy, while Calalliouet of Baton Rouge in Holiday
was 150 king pin. Clayton Boudreaux in Harry Bilbe's Tin Horn put
on a show for the more than 4000 fans with speeds of 125 mph.
Pelican Harbor Regatta
A record crowd thronged Pelican Harbor Yacht Club in Miami, Fla., June
23, to witness a thrill-packed, well dispatched race of inboard, outboard
pleasure craft and stock outboard boats.
Nine 266 hydros entered the competition with a spectacular climax.
Miami's Bob Moore in My Bad Penny, a purple fiberglass hydro, after
running second to Lou Nuta in the first heat, was leading the 100 mph fleet
up to the final turn of the last lap in the second heat when he dug into
a wave and hooked on his side.
Spectators gasped when only one arm of Bob's 6'4" frame was visible
tenaciously clinging to the wheel. After a breath-taking instant the hydro
righted itself and Moore was slammed back into the cockpit.
On the verge of blacking out, he instinctively thrust his foot down
on the gas pedal and somehow navigated the final turn, barely crossing
the finish line as he eased up on the throttle momentarily blinded by blood
and salt water in his eyes. The price of his death grip on the wheel was
a torn shoulder ligament and two black eyes.
However, Moore emerged victorious as over-all winner. Lou Koehler in
Tootsie
managed to pass him just before the finish line, for first place in the
final heat. The result was that Lou Nuta Jr. in his Roman Candle
placed second with Lou Koehler's Tootsie running third due to difficulty
starting in the first heat. Other drivers were veterans Pop Smith, Fuzzy
Furlong, Max Saylor, Jim Brennan, Jay Marden and Gene Bramlett.
The E and F Service Runabouts afforded the usual spectacular thrills
with Del and Mona Daily in their Oh! Mona capturing both heats,
while Ben Pumo in Second Mortgage and J. D. Wooldridge in Frustration
fought hard for second place, which went to Bill Bourne's Scandal
driven by Howard Hibbert, with third over-all to Wooldridge.
Well-known and outstanding driver S. R. (Bos) Boswell, of Hialeah,
owner of Dinah Might, did not enter the race due to the fact he
is installing a completely new engine, which he hopes to have ready for
the forthcoming annual Fourth of July regatta at Harbour One, North Miami
Beach, Fla.
Bob Conn's Miss Conncraft suffered a broken drive line in the
second
heat, causing him to drop out.
In the twin-engined JJ and U outboard pleasure craft classes, George
Griley of Miami in his JJ-13 drove hard to capture both heats, beating
Steve Malone, a consistent winner, who spun out on the third turn of the
second lap, second heat, forfeiting second place over-all to Bob Ridgell
of Miami in his conventional hull and beating ace driver Dave Craig in
his twin- hulled U-1.
In the always exciting 48 hydros, Bascomb Grooms of Key West, in his
Tinkerbell,
walked off with both heats, with l7-year-old Randy Harris of Miami
placing second in his first official race. Sunny Jones was third, due to
his inability to start in the first heat.

Johnny Johnson Captures 1000 Island Marathon
Johnny Johnson of Kenosha, Wis., winner of the 1000 Islands International
Outboard Marathon on June 9, could have claimed laurels for an obstacle
run as well as for this 100-mile classic on the St. Lawrence River!
Getting off to a slow start when his DU craft stalled as the 91 drivers
took off at Alexandria Bay, N.Y., Johnson managed to gain the lead as he
raced past the Alexandria Bay checkpoint on his return from Clayton, N.Y.,
heading towards Brockville, Ontario. Thirty seconds ahead as he approached
the Canadian city, halfway point of the race, Johnson was suddenly flipped
out of his boat into the Brockville narrows. Runner-up Bob Jacobson of
Flint, Mich., took advantage of Johnson's, plight and passed him, gaining
a full minute's lead.
Johnson, wet but undaunted, climbed back into his boat to catch up
with Jacobson at the second Clayton check. His decision to chance the tricky
stretch of water through the back islands instead of staying in the main
channel allowed Johnson to roar over the finish line at Alexandria Bay
25 sec. ahead of Jacobson, to achieve a thrilling record finish in 1:49:50
in spite of the obstacles. Johnson's time is nearly two minutes faster
than the record set by three-time winner Ray Lenk of Detroit in 1961.
The coveted 1000 Islands Bridge Trophy for the best improved time in
any class over last year was won by Fred Miller of Trenton, Mich.,
who also carried off first prize in the BU class with a record 2:00:38.
Michigan again scored on top in the AU class with Vic Brinkman coming in
first in 2:27:31, a gain of 6 min., 36 sec; over the previous record. Some
$5000 in cash prizes and trophies were awarded to the five top winners
in each class in amounts ranging from $500 to $50, making this race one
of the largest in the country monetarily.
In contrast to last year's strong winds which might have set a record
for a slow finish, the St. Lawrence waters were calm despite an overhanging
fog and mist at the start. But the sun soon broke through, giving the 50,000
spectators lining the New York and Canadian shores, and along the river
in pleasure craft, a thrilling sight of what most drivers called the best
1000 Islands Marathon yet. Sanctioned by the APBA, this 9th annual outboard
race was produced by the Chamber of Commerce of Alexandria Bay and sponsored
by the 1000 Islands International Council; the Atlantic Refining Company;
WWNY radio station, Watertown; and the AC Spark Plug Division of General
Motors Corporation, with the cooperation of the Chambers of Commerce of
Clayton, N.Y. and Brookville, Ontario, Canada.
Tulio Celano, Jr., Elmsford, NY captured the 36 class division of the
1000 Island International Outboard Marathon, covering the 100-mile open
course in 2:27:07 in fog and mist. |
