BOATS UNDER RESTORATION:
Bill John III reports that Jeff Magnuson has
sold his Jack Colcock built 266 hydro, ROMAN CANDLE, to Gerry Davidson.
Gerry will complete the restoration started by Jeff and he hopes to have
the hydro ready for the 2009 Vintage Wolfeboro Regatta. In order to make
room for his new project, Gerry plans on selling his beautiful vintage
225 Division I step-hydro, EDNANDY II.
Region 11’s, Mike Reitman has finished a 6
year restoration on MISS WINDY, the last conventional 7 Litre hydro built
by Jon Staudacher and Dave Wrzesinski. Mike has renamed the hydro, MISS
SANTA CRUZ and is looking forward to showing and running her in 2008 vintage
events.
NOTES:
Noted V8-60 engine builder, Rich Willim has
a newly published book, “The V8-60 – Ford’s Little Powerhouse.” The
book is a response to the many questions Rich has been asked in regards
to building and repairing the famed Ford Flathead. The book is full of
information and pictures, and covers the tear down and reassembling of
the V8-60 that was used in APBA’s 135 and 136 cu. in. hydroplane, as well
as the PODH and B Racing Runabout classes.
CHALLENGES:
Ike Keilgas is looking for a 13 X 20 propeller
that fits a one inch shaft. Ike’s beautiful Ventnor 7 Litre, MERCURY broke
a prop blade at Pateros, Washington causing minimal damage to the hull’s
bottom but destroying the prop. If you can help Ike, please contact this
newsletter.
REPORTS:
BILL JOHN III REPORT
Fall is in full swing here in beautiful Wolfeboro,
the evening temps are getting colder, the days have been have been rainy,
but color in the foliage is coming on strong. We had our annual Fall Foliage
Cruise on October 6th, it was the last Lake Winnipesaukee boating event
of the season. George Johnson started the tradition years ago, and now
Charlie Train has stepped up to revive our annual trek. Many thanks to
Charlie, Rick, and the weather gods for a magnificent day. Here is the
link to photos: http://www.necacbs.org/FallFoliageCruise-2007.htm
The weather gods were also with us for our
12th Annual Wolfeboro Vintage Car & Boat Rendezvous. Thanks to Rick
Kourian for managing the car parking and our dock miester Phil Spencer.
Bill John and Donnie McLean managed the front gate and Gerri Prusko did
a superb job with the car and boat registrations. Thank you to event co-chairs
Joe Williams and Bob Morrissey for another great Rendezvous. Here’s the

The Wolfeboro Vintage Race Boat Regatta, September
13-15, was our biggest and best Wolfeboro Regatta yet. We had 2 cranes
for the 60+ vintage race boats, and ran a tight schedule. We had vintage
heats every 20 minutes for 2 full days (Friday and Saturday). The cranes
and constant launching of the hydros provided for stunning visuals and
the sounds were just magnificent. Many thanks to event organizers Hank
Why, Gerri Prusko, Brian Small, Carol Cloutier, along with our crane launch
crew of Rick Kourian, Shaun Berry and Roger Burgess.
In an effort to make our 2009 Wolfeboro Vintage
Race Boat Regatta even better, we sent a Feedback Questionnaire to all
regatta participants. As a special thank you to all regatta participants,
we will be sending out a Regatta DVD. We are in the final editing process,
and have good coverage of all the activities on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

We have had a lot of fun this year on our 2007
APBA Vintage Race Boat Circuit. We want to thank Tom Bertolini for his
sage leadership of our APBA Vintage & Historic Division, the fastest
growing segment of the APBA. The amount of work and the many long hours
that Tom devotes is much appreciated. We also want to thank all the
organizers of our APBA vintage events. The amount of volunteer time these
events chew up is unbelievable, and their time is very much appreciated.

Please join us at the shop for our Saturday
Morning Gatherings. The coffee and donuts are usually ready by 9:00. We
have vintage boat racing videos on our big screen TV with the sound blasting
from our Bose speakers.
BOB SILVA’S WEST COAST REPORT:
LAKEPORT VINTAGE EVENT
The pits were packed at Library Park in Lakeport,
CA. and the weather was perfect, high 70’s with no wind. There were over
35 boats in the pits; Nor Cal Ski boats, vintage drag boats, vintage hydroplanes,
C Sport outboards, and vintage flatbottoms. This was the “test pancake”
for a combined California Speedboat Association (CSA) and Nor Cal Boat
and Ski Club event. The CSA was sponsoring the first California APBA Vintage/Historic
event.
The vintage boats present had a lot of APBA
history behind them. Norman Rose towed LIL BEE, 28-B with his 1949 Ford
coupe, and it was a big hit with the spectators. Norman’s father, Ernie
Rose, drove the B Racing Runabout to many national championships and class
records. Marshall Kraus had his Ted Jones built, National High Point 7
Litre, REDSKIN, H-71 on static display. Ralph Finley brought his recently
restored hydro, HONEYBEAR, 116-E. The hydro is the oldest existing 280
National Champion, having captured the win in 1961 for owner Norman Morris
with veteran Allan Ford driving. Past Super Stock National champ and record
holder, SHOCK WAVE also ran in flybys. Gene Dangel brought the former Rudy
Ramos 20 ft. marathon flatbottom which Rudy drove to victory at the 1969
Orange Bowl 250 Speed Classic. Lance Destafans brought two Sangers, a flatbottom
and a picklefork drag hydro.
The ski races started the day’s events and their
heats went forward until a break that allowed the vintage flatbottoms to
take to the water. There was Dale Lansberry in the beautifully restored
Patterson SHOCK WAVE, SS-88; Don Denny in a Pro Stock Hondo; the beautiful
Patterson SK owned by Bill Bradenberg, ALLEY CAT; Allen Rouse and Michael
Gasper in the J.J. McCants built Crackerbox BLUE HAWK, 75-P; and Frank
Camelli’s gourgeous Sanger Pro Stock, which was a DNS due to over heating
problems. More ski racing heats followed the vintage flatbottoms, and then
the two vintage hydros went out for flyby laps. Stuart Ford drove Mike
Johnson’s 1 Litre CALIFORNIA KID, T-48 and John Lawrence (wearing John
Walti’s lip stick camera on his helmet for pov video shots) drove his restored
Lauterbach 280, THRILL ME, E-247. The APBA event concluded for the day
and the Nor Cal club then allowed water time for two of the vintage blown
alcohol hydros. Bob Garner drove his Sanger MISS SUPER GLIDE and Dave Fullington
then made several passes in his beautiful Sanger WESTERN MAG SPL.
Our first APBA V/H event was deemed a success
and is bound to be better next year, with the knowledge we have gained.
VINTAGE HOT BOAT OF THE MONTH
Norman Rose brought the most famous B Racing
Runabout of all time, LIL BEE, 28-B, and towed her to Lakeport’s vintage
event with his 1949 Ford Coupe. Norman’s father, Ernie, drove the much
modified Speedliner designed, fuel-injection Falcon powered hull, to numerous
APBA National and High Point Championships. The 28-B holds the existing
kilo and competition records for the now defunct class.
