NOTES:
Jack Cotton, owner of SORCERESS, E-73, a 1979 Jones 280 cabover, was seriously injured January 27th when his snowmobile was involved in an accident. He was taken to the hospital with several pelvis fractures, a broken collarbone and broken ribs. Jack will be missing some 2007 Vintage events while he is recovering at home. Best wishes for a complete recovery from the APBA vintage membership.

VINTAGE RACERS REDISCOVERED:
V&H Historian Bill DeGlopper, shared an update of Mark Breiding and his family’s search for their old race boats. "Norm and I went through lots of old photographs and flyers – all showing the CHICKIE boats in race footage. He has photos of them racing Guy Lombardo and Jim Moran, back the in old days. We believe that there were six boats total: CHICKIE I and II were outboards, CHICKIE III and IV were Thunderbolts, CHICKIE V and VI were Glazers."
Judy Fisk owns the CHICKIE VI, built by Pop Glazier in 1946. The single seat E Racing Runabout, powered by a flathead Mercury V-8, has been in storage for over a decade. Bill Munro's owns the CHICKIE IV, E-10 which has a unique sprint car type cowl made by Heilgas(?) of Philadelphia. Visually, the cowl resembles the Phil Sharples BOMBITA.

REPORTS:
Bill John III Report
We just got back from the APBA Annual Meeting in Los Angeles to find that the winter chill has hit us pretty hard here in beautiful Wolfeboro. The temps have been well below zero during the nights for the past week, but the days have been sunny, we finally got a little snow last week, the lakes are frozen over, the snow guns at the ski resorts are blasting away, and we are now enjoying a classic, beautiful, New England winter.
We had many good discussions at our APBA Annual Meeting in LA. Our Vintage Chairman, Tom Bertolini ran our vintage meeting and as usual, Buddy Byers, Charlie Strang, Larry Lauterbach and Mark Webber added some colorful comments, and sage advice. We had 20 Vintage members attending and 5 guests, a good agenda and some lively discussions. Here is the link for photos:

Tom & Jacq Bertolini’s fifth annual APBA Vintage Winter Gathering was on February 24th . Last year's Winter Gathering attracted over 90 hard-core, vintage race boat addicts. We all had a great time, as the vintage banter and videos continued well into the wee hours. Here is the link for all the details and photos from last year http://www.vintageraceboatshop.com/APBAVintageWinterGathering-2007.htm
And for you locals – an invitation to please join us at the shop for our Saturday Morning Gatherings. The coffee and donuts are usually ready by 9:00, we have vintage boat racing videos on our big screen TV, and this week you can checkout a very special Dick Sooy 280 vintage hydroplane – Double Eagle. And as a special added attraction, Mike Michaud has invited us to his boat shop for lunch and a progress check on his 31 foot Gar Wood Speedster project – Murlen. Yup, Mike is gonna fire up his hot dog steamer, and we will leave our shop at 11:30 for the short trek to Acton, Maine. Our previous visit to Mike’s shop was last March, the hot dogs were superb, and here is the link for lots of project photos. http://www.vintageraceboatshop.com/Murlen.htm
And now for some updates on our 2007 APBA Vintage Race Boat Circuit, but first and we want to thank all the event organizers of our APBA vintage events. The amount of volunteer time these APBA vintage events chew up is unbelievable, and we want the organizers to know that their volunteer time is very much appreciated. The following event organizers are working very closely with us, to maintain ‘Participant WebPages” with daily updates of event details and current entry lists.
Thanks to Rick Shannon for sending lots of updates for the “Thunder on Onondaga” at Syracuse, New York on June 15-17, 2007. Rick is working hard to bring our beloved APBA vintage race boats to Syracuse to run with the APBA/CBF 5 and 2.5 litre race boats. Here is the link for the latest updates: http://www.vintageraceboatshop.com/Syracuse2007.htm
Thanks to Ben Lemay for working hard to bring our vintage race boats back to Valleyfield, Quebec on July 6-8, 2007. This is a huge event, the largest inboard regatta in North America, running a mix of inboard hydroplanes, Jersey Speed Skiffs, flat bottoms, and of course our beloved vintage race boats. The exciting news this year in the return/resurgence of the exciting Grand Prix hydroplanes. Here is the link for lots of photos from last year:

Thanks to Tom Bertolini and Alan Radue for sending updates for the Detroit APBA Gold Cup Unlimited Hydroplane Regatta on July 13-15, 2007. They are hard at work planning for this summer's Detroit APBA Gold Cup. This is perhaps the most exciting event on our vintage circuit, as we get to run with the big dogs - the unlimited hydroplanes. Here is the link for all the details:

Thanks to Dan and Deb Joseph for sending the updates for their second annual, Wheeling Vintage Raceboat Regatta, August 31-September 2, 2007. This year's event expands to three full days, with registrations, safety inspections and a social gathering all day Friday, August 31st and exhibition heats of vintage race boats on the beautiful Ohio River all day Saturday and Sunday, September 1-2. Thanks to Bill and Rich DeGlopper for sending all the updates for their Buffalo Vintage Race Boat Regatta on September 7-9, 2007. Their hospitality is second to none, and the beautiful vintage boats start arriving on Friday morning, Sept 8th with registration and APBA vintage safety inspections during the day, followed with the now famous free "Pit Pass Party" at the Launch Club. The Vintage boats will be on display on Saturday and will run demonstration laps on the historic BLC race course all day long. The sights and sounds are spectacular from the docks, and here is the link for the latest updates: http://www.vintageraceboatshop.com/Buffalo-2007.htm
Thanks to Hank Why, Gerri Prusko, Brian Small, Rick Kourian, Jason Pomerleau, and Donnie McLean for their help with our Wolfeboro Vintage Race Boat Regatta on Sept 13-15, 2007. The past will come alive as some of the best known race boats of bygone eras return to Wolfeboro, for our fifth Wolfeboro Vintage Race Boat Regatta. Wolfeboro is now a major stop on the APBA Vintage Race Boat Circuit, and this summer's regatta expands to 3 full days, and includes 60 Vintage race boats running demonstration laps on a 1 mile oval course, on beautiful Wolfeboro Bay. In addition to seeing and hearing these unique and beautiful boats run, spectators are invited to view them close-up in the pit area, at the Town Docks. Here is the link for all the latest updates

Completion is scheduled for June and the boat will debut at Syracuse – The Thunder on Onondaga. Here is the link for our project photos: http://www.vintageraceboatshop.com/Scorpio.htm
We are also working closely with our new ACBS Chapter president Hal Sanderson, putting together a full slate of activities including a Spring Romp and a Fall Foliage Cruise. We just updated the calendar page on our chapter Website with two addition events, the ACBS Vintage Boating Symposium at Mystic Seaport and the Maine Boatbuilders Show in Portland, Maine. That’s it for now Gang – gotta sand and apply the final coat of varnish on Double Eagle. This historic Sooy hydroplane will debut at Syracuse this June.
