BOATS UNDER RESTORATION:
Jack Stetser from New Jersey has located and
acquired Henry Knabb’s Big Bawana, a Ron Jones 7 Litre. Jack also
has the pickle-forked, rear seat Lauterbach, 7 Litre, Zanadu and
he is currently looking for the pickle-fork Grand Prix Lauterbach that
is somewhere up in Canada. Does anyone know where this Raceboat is?
Bob Birdsall of West Palm Beach, FL still
has his record holding JSS Baron hull, Flat Flyin. The boat has
been sitting for 10 years since he retired from racing. Now he has pulled
her out of mothballs and is getting the motor ready for vintage flybys.
NOTES:
Chuck Kaiser from Detroit, Mi has bought back
his 150 cubic inch Jones hydroplane, Family Affair that Woody Pliescott
raced to a competition record in 1974. The boat needs to be restored.
CHALLENGES:
Our members are looking for vintage raceboat
equipment, propellers, life jackets, instruments, racing hardware of all
types, cowlings and more. If you have any of these items and want to part
with them, please give me a call and I’ll pass the word on.

JOE JOHNSON REPORT:
Madison Regatta. I want to first say
THANKS to everyone who helped me with the 2002 Vintage Event here at Madison.
We were a HUGE SUCCESS!!
Madison had 22 Vintage Raceboats in the pits.
We had water time all three days -twice a day. The Friday night parade
was a big hit with the Vintage Family. They just couldn't believe all the
people along the parade route, and the applause and support that the fans
were giving to them.
Dave & Jean Johnson were hosts to their
annual "after the parade party". I want to thank Jean & Dave for having
the Vintage Family. We also had a dinner on Saturday night to go along
with the fireworks. Dave opened the Close Shave II shop for sleepovers
for any of the Vintage Family that needed a place to stay. Bill John, Donnie
McLean, Jim Moore and Steve Reynolds all stayed either in the shop or at
the house. Thanks Dave for your help.
Saturday marked a special event for Dave &
myself. We restored the Close Shave II and she made her maiden voyage
back on the Ohio River in front of the hometown crowd. This was the first
time for the engine and hydro to take to the water in 38 years. Loren Charley
(76 year old original builder) was present on Sunday and took the Close
Shave II for a spin.
On the Bill Cantrell Memorial course, Bill
John & Donnie McLean in Obsession and Dave Williams driving
the MIST MADISON were running together. This was quite a sight to
see, and the fans loved it. Another memorable moment was when Bill Cousins
after 37 years of retirement ran his 7 Litre, River Rat. Whenever
any Vintage hydros took to the water, we had LIVE coverage from Jeff Ayler,
Regatta P.A. Announcer and WORX, our local radio station. I'm even told
that you could listen to the live coverage via the hydro network. For the
Vintage class to get this kind of coverage for Madison's first Event, we
are extremely pleased! I want to say THANKS to all of the Vintage Raceboat
Owners who came to Madison. The guys put on one whale of a show for the
fans, AND THEY WERE APPRECIATED!! Ann Center, incoming-Regatta President,
has already indicated that she wants the Vintage Class back at Madison
for the 2003 Regatta. So with that being said, I will start to work immediately
with hopes that we can improve on staging a bigger & better show for
the fans. Thanks again to everyone who gave their time and energy to make
Madison's first Vintage Event, a HUGE SUCCESS.
DETROIT - GOLD CUP REPORT:
The vintage part of this event went off without
a hitch. The weather and the water were the best conditions that Detroit
has offered in many a year. As usual the Spirit of Detroit ran a tight
ship and we were on schedule getting plenty of water time on Saturday and
Sunday. We would like to thank Dave Yeager owner of JSS-97 River Rat
for allowing us to use his trailer for “Vintage Central.” We certainly
know of one APBA vintage member that had the time of her life, riding on
both the Gold Cup and Grand Prix courses race weekend. Kathy Shuler is
still smiling. Dave Williams driving the Mist Madison fulfilled
his childhood dream of running an unlimited hydroplane on the Famed Gold
Cup Detroit racecourse. A Tip of the hat to Dave and his volunteer crew
who kept that vintage unlimited hydroplane running smoothly all weekend.
Another nice display was Jim Grams’ “work-in-progress” unlimited hydroplane,
Notre Dame. Brought in on a tilt trailer, the fans got a close-up
look at how much time and effort goes into building an unlimited hydroplane
from scratch. The boat was still on the jig with the frames and stringers
glued together. We wish him continued success with his project and we will
keep you updated as more work is completed. We would like to thank both
Kathy Shuler and Chuck Holmes for their help in making our part of the
APBA Gold Cup Vintage event successful.
QUICKIE REPORT ON QUAKE ON THE LAKE:
This was a vintage event that ran in conjunction
with an inboard regatta. We wish to thank Bob Dabrowski and his entire
Regatta team for including vintage on the schedule. Thank you, Jim Potter
for performing the vintage safety inspections. Early reports indicate that
we had seven restored vintage hydroplanes on site and doing flybys.
VINTAGE HOT BOAT OF THE MONTH:
The original builder 76 year old, Loren Charley,
drove the 225 cubic inch hydro Close Shave II, N-73, owned by Dave
Johnson on Sunday at the Madison Regatta.
