BOATS UNDER RESTORATION:
Another old hydro has been pulled from a barn.
Dick Harris of Okeana, OH has stumbled across and acquired the late Bob
Meyers’s 150 cubic inch conventional hydro Glory Cat. Dick tells
us that the hydro is not in bad shape considering she has been sitting
for about 13 years. He has also finished up the decking on his 72 cubic
inch Sooy hydro, T-2. Lot of work to go yet, but Harris hopes to
have her ready for Clayton.
NOTES:
Charlotte Yehle sent us an advance copy of
the new poster for Clayton’s Antique Raceboat Regatta 2002.It’s really
nice! The top of the poster features the late Ben Lowell waving while driving
his Ventnor E Racer, ALFA. Next is John Culver flying through the
air in his outboard racer Yankee Doodle JR. Below that Sid Street
setting the World Record in the 266-ci hydro Z-Z-Zip. The bottom
of the poster features the newly restored Sister Sin T-30. Doug
Bindrim now owns this former Horace Dodge Sweepstakes Raceboat. Everyone
that attends Clayton will want a copy!
Bill DeGlopper of Grand Island, NY has added
to his stable of vintage raceboats a complete running Bender Jersey Speed
Skiff, JS-88. I am sure Bill will have lots of fun with friends
in this one.
CHALLENGES:
Bob Silva has issued a challenge. What
became of the trend setting 225-ci hydro, TIGER TOO, N-86? Built
in 1961 by Ron Jones Sr., the rear-engine hull design was the first of
many highly successful limited and unlimited hydroplanes, now known as
“Cabovers”. Owner/Driver Harry Schneider of Palo Alto, CA raced the all
white, 220-ci Ford powered hull to a competition record of 81.521 mph in
1963. The new record shattered the old mark by over 6 mph. Schneider then
served notice to all conventional hydro owners with a record kilo run of
121.280 at Parker, AZ in ’64. Duane Roaderick of Minneapolis then bought
the N-86 and renamed her, BIG WHEEL. Does any one know what became
of this historic hydroplane?
Does anyone know what happened to Jack Lawrence’s
Jersey Speed Skiff the Blue Goose? The last known whereabouts was
in the state of Michigan. The Blue Goose was a record holding and
many time champion J & S hull.

ON A SAD NOTE:
Former Owner/Driver Daniel J. Murphy Jr (81)
of Gladwyne, PA passed away on May 3rd. Dan an APBA member for 64 years
campaigned in various classes which included the 7 Litre and Unlimiteds.
Murphy set his first World record over 62 years ago. Dan’s favorite race
was the President’s cup at Washington, DC. His boats were known as the
Dee-Jay and always carried the number 66. As an owner with Norman
Lauterbach doing the driving, he won the 1952 Imperial Gold Cup held at
New Martinsville, WVA with his Allison powered Ventnor Gold Cupper, Dee-Jay
V, G-66.
Daniel believed in and supported the
APBA Vintage Division. One of the nice things that Dan did was to award
the Perpetual Daniel J. Murphy Sr. Memorial Trophy to the individual that
best represented power boat racing past at the Clayton Antique Race boat
Regatta since 1994. Our condolences are extended to Daniel’s family and
friends.
Note: This perpetual trophy on display at the
Clayton Museum is a Philadelphia bowl made of sterling silver approximately
2 ft in diameter. On the top of the bowl was a sculptured Ventnor 225 hydroplane
copied from Guy Lombardo’s Tempo V. The tailfin of the hydro had
red, white and blue stripes, which prompted silversmith Mr. Oscar Kind
of Kind Jewelers to insert diamonds, rubies, and sapphires into the tail
fin to represent the colors. The hull is created from white gold and the
sponsons are formed in 14kt. gold. This trophy was originally awarded to
the 225 cubic inch Hi-point Champion for Regions 3 and 4. But was lost
in 1971 for 23 years. After it’s recovery in 1994, Mr. Murphy chose to
change the format for its presentation. For that we will always be grateful.
BOB SILVA’S WEST COAST REPORT:
BOUNCY BARBY set a mile straight-a-way
record for Crackers in 1951 at 72.045 mph. Running a screaming Chevrolet
six cylinder, which featured a Wayne Horning head and dual Venturi side
draft carbs. She was very competitive against the Ford and Mercury Flatheads.
Brown found it tough going in 1952, racing against the new OHV Dodge Red
Ram, introduced to the Crackerbox class by the Patterson Brothers HOT
CINDERS.
BOUNCY BARBY was sold in 1953 to Wendell
Tucker and renamed, RATTLER, 3-P. Brown went on to build a record
setting, National Champion, E Racing Runabout, BOUNCY BARBY II, 16-E
using the Wayne-Chevy Six engine combination. (See Propeller
9/98).
VINTAGE HOT BOAT OF THE MONTH:
Sporting the number 1-P and the APBA High Point
Shield for the 1952 racing season, Ed Brown’s BOUNCY BARBY reveals
the bottom of her Fred Wicken’s hull. Brown flies the Crackerbox across
his hometown waters, the rough and debris-strewn Sacramento River, as 52
year old riding mechanic, Les Condon, holds tight.
