BOATS UNDER RESTORATION:
William Trent of Atlanta, GA has located and
is restoring LeRoy Penhall’s old SK-81 Sizzler. There are very few
wood Patterson flatbottom hulls in existence. Bob Patterson is an exquisite
craftsman. His hulls were considered the Cadillac’s of the fleet. Bob does
not build raceboats anymore but he has knowledge of the whereabouts of
most of his hulls.
Gun Shy, Tin-Horn, Miss
Peg, one and the same, has been located!! Jack Hines from Dayton, Ohio,
with the help of Phil Kunz after a twelve month search located this Ron
Jones conventional residing in a swamp for the last 17 years in Louisiana,
near Baton Rouge. Needless to say, the condition of the boat was not great
but savable. They had to cut down trees to get the hull out of the swamp.
The boat now is in Dayton, Ohio. Jack has started to research the boat’s
illustrious career before he gets into the hands on restoration. Jack will
send more details of how they tracked and located the boat. So look for
future updates. Bill Buntin driving this boat, Miss Peg, in 1968
at St. Petersburg, FL set the 266 competition record at 92.308 mph. This
was a historic run because it marked the first appearance of an inboard
hydro with an outside skid fin, at least in the East.
NOTES:
We received a letter from APBA member Guido
Romani of Milan, Italy. His father and grandfather raced in the outboard
class X1000 during the 1930’s thru the 1960’s, in Europe. They won many
European and Italian Championships. Today Guido is a collector of Antique
Race boats and pleasure boats. He has a collection of hydros from the 50’s
and 60’s. One of his boats has a 6 cylinder Romani 1000 cc supercharged
engine (from the original famous Soriano Engine). He also has a Riva and
a 1950 Timossi. Guido would like to know which magazines to subscribe to
that have coverage on Vintage raceboats? If you have suggestions, please
contact me. Our members might also be interested in obtaining other publications.
Fred Brouse of Iroquois, Ontario has
the original plans for his famous Miss Valleyfield, a conventional
280 inboard hydro. These plans are drawn on plywood. Fred is looking for
a good home for them. He will keep them until after the holidays. If no
one is interested then he will get rid of them. You can contact Fred at
(613) 652-4345.
Bill Wooding of Wilson, NC has purchased
another completely restored Glasspar G-3 1958 hull. The hull came out of
Pennsylvania. Bill plans to house it at Lake Gaston, NC.
We need more input for our members. If
anyone would like to represent their particular area, with a monthly or
bi-monthly report, please drop us a line. We need your support. All vintage
pictures would be appreciated. Help to keep this column a must read on
your Propeller browsing.

We want to thank Jim Sharkey for his

We definitely need this type of material when researching our articles.
These books are a compilation of facts on the Unlimiteds. Thank you again,

CHALLENGES:
Conrad Troutner, from Georgia, is looking for
a 150 Lloyd hull known as Seldom Seen, A-50. The boat raced in Florida
during the sixties and seventies. If anyone has information about the Seldom
Seen, please contact Conrad at (541) 965-3006.
William Trent of Atlanta, GA is looking
for information on LeRoy Penhall’s Sizzler, a Patterson flatbottom, especially
any World Records that may have been set during the 1960 to 1972 era. The
hull may have run with the SK-or E Racing Runabout -81 number. Willie‘s
phone number is (770) 668-0071. To the best of this writer’s’ research
the Sizzler, SK-81, set the 5 mile Competition record on 5/22/1966
at San Diego, CA at 85.552 mph. LeRoy Penhall was the owner and driver.
His record stood until 1971. There is no indication that this boat held
the class straight-away record at year end under this name.

FAMOUS TROPHIES OF THE PAST:
Leafing thru the 1941 APBA Rule Book something
caught my interest. This is a List of APBA Challenge Trophies. Some of
these might be of interest to our current members. Where are they now????
#1. For an ocean race of 150 or more miles
in length they had the James Craig Trophy, open to boats 30’ to 60’ in
length.
#2. Gold Cup racing DeRoy Trophy, awarded to
the boat making the fastest lap in the Gold Cup race.
#3. Interstate Trophy for the 135 cubic inch
class, now known as 2.5 modified, 3 Heats not less than 10 miles in length.
#4. One Mile Championship Trophy for mile trials
to be held at the same time and same place as the Gold Cup race and open
to Gold Cup boats.

annual race at Washington, DC for unlimited single engine hydroplanes.

Does anyone have any information concerning
the whereabouts of these trophies?? In the library at the APBA offices, there
is the John Charles Thomas Trophy. This was for the National Championship
in the 225 class. Also there is the Presidents Cup for the annual race
at Washington, DC open to Gold Cup Boats. The Antique Boat Museum has on
display the National Sweepstakes Trophy for unlimited single propeller
boats held at Red Bank, NJ. Mike Noonan, Chief Unlimited Referee presently
has the Calvert Marine Derby Trophy was awarded for the annual regatta

that I failed to mention, drop us a line.
HARRY BRINKMAN REPORT:
In July the Michiana Antique Outboards held
their Constantine SUPER Meet for showing and running of all types of antique
outboard motors and boats. Open exhaust was permitted and many old race
outfits were run. If we can scare up a few more of these wonderful sounding
“crates” we’ll have a local class to race. Anyone interested in 4-60 racing
or attending the 1998 Constantine SUPER Meet contact Harry Brinkman (219)
834-4844.
VINTAGE HOT BOAT OF THE MONTH:
Triple Trouble, is a Ron Jones designed
and built, Marathon Outboard Tunnel. This was another of Mercury’s factory
boats. The late Don Pruitt was the driver of Triple Trouble in this
photo. Mercury Marine used these boats for the experimental development
of their engines, during the early seventies.
