BOATS UNDER RESTORATION:
Tony Sultan of Wayzata, MN has purchased a Robarge cracker box hull. It was originally named Tom’s Cat and was built for Clyde and Kenny Lasin from Provo, Utah. The hull is in the paint shop at this time.  e plans to restore the boat to its original 1963 mint condition. Hopefully the hull will have a 265 Chevy for power. He plans to have the boat ready for future APBA Vintage Regattas.

NOTES:
Bob Moore from Red Bank, NJ has volunteered to keep us updated as to the Vintage happenings on the East Coast. His addition to our article will appear monthly. Bob is already hard at work preparing his article for an upcoming issue. We are still looking for a West Coast Volunteer to keep us posted each month as to the Vintage activities on that coast.
We have put Jim Mitchell, the former driver of the Tinker Toy, in touch with Bob Gilroy, her new owner. We hope that the two of them will be able to share some of the boat’s racing history.  Thanks Jim!!
I failed to mention in the December issue of the Propeller Magazine our Hot Boat of the Month Z-Z-Zip was also owned for a short time by Al Brinkman Jr. of Grand Island, New York. His boats were always called Seabiscuit.  Sorry for this omission.
Keith Brayer would like our membership to know that he has many detailed plans of vintage raceboats for those who would like to build replicas.
Ken Ramsey of Kingsville, Ontario sent us pictures of a Vintage Canadian Grand Prix boat with an airplane fuselage for cowlings. The boat’s number was GP-92. The hull was zinc chromate primer. The cowlings were natural aluminum. This writer witnesses this raceboat at Picton, Ontario in the late seventies. To my knowledge, the boat never did get up on plane.  Ken races a vintage One Litre  that was Terry Collin’s old Y-55 Lloyd hull.
Also on a sad note, we are sorry to report that Charlie Lloyd recently passed away.  He was a great boat builder and racer of inboard hydroplanes.
On a lighter note, it’s great to be a boat racer. Recently in our travels to Tallahassee, FL we stopped at the World Famous Julia Mae’s Seafood Restaurant in Carabelle, FL. Wouldn’t you know it, while watching the pelicans we bumped into Jean & Lewis Bennett of Hiawassee, GA whom we had never met. But guess what, through our conversations we discovered that we had boat racing in common. Low and behold, Jean Bennett was Ray (Sunshine Baby H-57) and Meredith Gassner’s cousin. We shared information and brought each other up to date. What a small world it is!!
Steve Greaves of Seattle, WA dropped us a line to inform our members that Antique Racing Hydros and runabouts are currently being raced on the West Coast and the Mid-West thru the auspices of APBA’s PRO Category. “The ‘C Service’ classes may very well be the oldest classes in all of motorsports, having been raced continuously with the same equipment for well over 60 years.” Although these are Vintage crafts, they are not to be confused with our V & H. Division. They run competitive events and we don’t.  Steve is volunteering more information on antique outboard racing.  If you are interested, Contact him at (206) 323-1262.

RACE SITES:
News flash!!  We have our MAJOR event for 1995!!  So mark these dates into your calendar: August 10th thru 13th.  PLACE: Lake Tahoe, CA. The Tahoe Yacht Club is hosting an Antique Race Boat Regatta that will be open to all classes of Vintage craft. We have succeeded in obtaining a West Coast Regatta for this year, so all of the West Coast should be happy. Our East Coast owners can enjoy a  wonderful trip to this event. We hope all enthusiasts and old time boat racers, with or without equipment, plan to attend this great West Coast reunion of race boat legends, crews, owners & drivers. Any member who would like to volunteer their help or participate in the Tahoe Yacht Club Regatta should contact: Steve Lapkin, General Manager Tahoe Yacht Club P.O. Box 286 Homewood, CA.  96141 phone # (916) 525-5225 or fax # (916) 525-0855.  As more information comes our way, we will pass it on. So dust off those boats! Start polishing that equipment,  and dig out your scrapbooks  for all of these events.
Detroit, MI:  Vintage participation in the 80th Anniversary of the Gold Cup  is confirmed. The Date: June 1st thru 4th. Slated are static displays and flybys on the World Famous Gold Cup course. The course is nestled in the Detroit River between the Detroit Yacht Club on the Belle Island side and the Roostertail on the Detroit shoreline. Think about this, Vintage members, not many people have the opportunity to run their raceboats on such a historic race course, especially during race week of APBA’s most prestigious race of the year. This Vintage event is going to be by invitation due to lack of pit space. So if you are interested in participating, please contact me ASAP at day (810)725-4582 or evenings (810) 725-7237. Early response insures the Spirit of Detroit Race Committee will be able to schedule proper pit facilities.
New Martinsville, West Virginia: We are presently talking with Race Representative Dan Dague about Vintage participation in their June event.  It would be reminiscent of past regattas to run our flybys on the smooth water of the Ohio River. Many World Records were set at this famous race site. More details will follow.
Hampton, Virginia: August 18th thru 20th. The 1995 Inboard Summer Nationals. Plan on it! We are still working out the final details for Vintage & Historic inboards. This will also be an East Coast racing legend's reunion. All are invited. We will keep you posted!!

CHALLENGES:
Jim Dernoncourt of Allen Park, MI has responded to  one of our challenges. He tells us that  Mr. Will Farmer still resides at 8415 Francona Rd. Richmond, VA 23227. Although Will has not built a hydroplane in years, he is very interested in assisting anyone who is restoring one of his boats.
The Perry Ritchie mystery continues.  From Keith Brayer of Port Ritchie, Fl.  He tells us that this is a 225 Division 1 class boat and a Tommy Hill hull. Keith asked us to relay this message on to our readers. No hull is too far gone. No matter how bad it is. Don’t destroy it. Pass it on to someone who will find a home for it. It still can be brought back to life.

VINTAGE HOT BOAT OF THE MONTH:
Ghost Rider   Jim Wynn was both the designer and driver of this famous Off Shore Racer. The owner was the late Hugh Doyle of Treasure Island, FL. This 28 Ft. all wood inboard deep V hull was powered with twin turbo charged Daytona Marine custom engines. Amongst its many victories, was the Miami-Key West Offshore race in December 1966. This boat also won the World Championship for Offshore Racing. We still believe that this boat exists somewhere in south Florida. It would be nice to find it.
