My first hydroplane, a Chuck Hickling 135 cu in.
Lake Sammamish, Washington 1965
I just built a new V8-60 engine and stained the deck and painted the
tailstock and replaced the steering cables and turnbuckles forgetting to
safety wire them and they came undone after a few turns while
qualifying at Lake Sammamish in 1965 as a new driver. What happened
next though? I was at the end of the 1st turn drifting away from the course
and the 1st heat of the 280's started before removing me from the course.
Seeing all those boats bearing down trying to get into the turn first scared
the heck out of me. The US Coast Guard took my line and towed me to the
pits. I qualified at Green Lake in Seattle the next race.
